The Very Best Short Books

It’s the middle of the year and so far you’ve not read a lot of books? While I don’t believe the number of books you read should matter as long as you enjoy them, I do get the satisfaction of finishing a book. So, if you’re struggling to make it through one, here are some great short book recommendations that will have you finish them in no time!

Winnie the Pooh by A. A. Milne

There’s nothing I don’t love about this little bear.

Children’s books tend to be short, and Winnie the Pooh is an absolute classic. I don’t suppose I have to tell you what it’s about, but just in case you’ve lived under a rock for the past century: It’s about a bear called Pooh, who lives in a forest with his friends. They have adventures together and go on quests, always support each other and are simply great fun. Winnie is one of my favourite fictional characters ever and he has a very special place in my heart. I do think reading the stories is so worth it if you’ve only ever seen the movies and you’ll fly through them! Plus, the illustrations are simply gorgeous!

I’m The King Of The Castle by Susan Hill

I love everything about this book, although it destroyed my soul.

I read I’m The King Of The Castle within two days. Not because I had lots of time on my hands, but because it’s short and unputdownable. The less you know about this novel, the better. But essentially, it’s a story about childhood and friendship, but with a twist. The atmosphere is eerie, the protagonist is lovable, the vibes are immaculate. I desperately had to know how this book would end. Susan Hill is a master of getting to the point quickly, without ever leaving anything important out. Her writing is stunning and precise and poetic and I could go on about it forever. I’m The King Of The Castle left a lasting impression on me, I recommend it all the time (as you might have noticed) and it’s a great choice if you’re stuck in a reading slump or want to read something that will pull you in entirely.

Heartstopper by Alice Oseman

My two favourite boys ❤

This graphic novel series might seem big at first glance, but Heartstopper is lots of illustrations with little text. I once read the third book during a lunch break. In case you spend no time on the internet and therefore don’t know about the phenomenon that Heartstopper has become, it’s about Nick and Charlie, two teenage boys who try to come to terms with their sexuality. It’s the most wholesome book you will ever read, I promise. It’s funny, but so emotional and raw and touching and considerate and once you’re done reading the book, I would highly recommend you do yourself a favour and watch the Netflix adaptation immediately (Kit Connor, you have my heart!!). It will pull you in and spit you out again feeling like an emotional wreck. You’ll love every second of it!

Waiting For Godot by Samuel Beckett

Copyright: Grove Press

I know that reading plays isn’t for everyone. After all, they are meant to be performed, not read. But Waiting For Godot is one of those exceptions where reading the script makes total sense for me. The genius of the play shines through every single line and it’s a delight to witness yourself slowly being driven crazy by all the goddamn waiting for Godot. In case you’re wondering what the play is about: Vladimir and Estragon are waiting for Godot to arrive. I know that sounds obscure, and it sure is, but it’s also damn genius. I have yet to see it live (I should try to rectify that as soon as possible), but I think it would be absolutely marvellous on stage. Seeing how play scripts are full of dialogue and stage directions, you are usually able to read it fairly quickly. If you’ve never read a play before, I would highly recommend giving Waiting For Godot a try!

Those are my short book recommendations! I hope you found them helpful, and if you need more recommendations, I have blog posts on books I wish were adapted and my favourite authors and why I love them
